MOURNING friends and relatives paid tribute to Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club legend Tim Gates during a beach memorial service on Saturday.

A crowd of almost 3000 people gathered for the 6pm service, where just four days earlier Mr Gates had a freak boarding accident which took his life at the age of 55.
