The 2015 Tim Gates Classic Fun Run & Walk on Sunday, January 11 attracted a crowd of some 600 runners, walkers and spectators.
All ages and abilities were catered for as entrants set off in perfect conditions – sunshine and a cooling SE breeze – which prevailed for the after party at the Sunset Lounge, also was a smash hit.
Tim Gates was a passionate and proud member of the Fairhaven SLSC. He devoted countless volunteer hours in the training and development of young members so that they could further their skills in competition, leadership and learning of the surf lifesaving movement. In 2008, Tim tragically died in a freak accident in the surf at Fairhaven.
Celebrating his love of lifesaving and the beach this community event raises funds for the club. Funds from previous events have supported the redevelopment of the new clubhouse and youth training programs.
President Trevor Baxter said it was appropriate the club staged the event on the same day as the carnival as Tim devoted so much of his time to surf lifesaving competition skills here and across the state.
“The Tim Gates Classic has become a very special event, which bonds all sections of our membership,” he said.
“The show of support never ceases to amaze us. How wonderful to see the Fairhaven beach covered with energised participants of all ages. The true sense of the word ‘fun’ was carried from the run well into the evening, said Jane Gates. It was summed up by a club member who told Jane: “What a great night last night Jane, in the true spirit of Tim. Don’t you just love the next generation coming through the club.”
Heading the VIP entrants were Australian Olympic medallist rowers, James Tomkins, Drew Ginn and Matt Long.
