Virtual Events FAQ

What is a virtual event?

A virtual event is where competitors complete the set distance (5km walk / run or 10km run) at any location and then lodge a valid time electronically.

This year, one entry will allow you to participate in both our traditional 5km event and 10km event. In addition, if you lodge a time for both the 5km and 10km distance, you automatically will feature in our 15km combined total event.

Why are you having a virtual event?

Due to Covid-19, we expect ongoing mass gathering restrictions in Victoria into 2021, and so we are unable to safely plan for the running of our events in early 2021.

When is the virtual Gates Classic 2021 event?

You can participate in this year’s Gates Classic anytime from 1st January 2021 to 10th January 2021.

Why not hold the event later in 2021?

The Gates Classic has always been strongly supported as part of the summer FSLSC events program. We rely on the summer holiday season where entrants and our volunteers are available to participate. So, we are unable to delay our event to later in 2021.

How do I register?

Same as in previous years. Follow the registration link on our FSLSC and Tim Gates Foundation websites.

When will registrations open and close?

Registrations will open in November, 2020 and will close at 9am on 10th January, 2021 or earlier if sold out.

I don’t live in Victoria or Australia; can I still enter?

Yes. Entries are open to anyone but overseas entries will require an additional postage fee for the t-shirt distribution.

What are the event prices?

Gates Classic Virtual 2021 entry is:

  • $30 for an Adult
  • $10 for a Child
  • $70 for a Family (2 Adults + 2 Children)

This year, one entry will allow you to participate in both our traditional 5km event and 10km event. With one entry, you can compete in both events by lodging times for each distance. As the event will run over 10 days, you can complete each event separately, anytime over the 10 days.

In addition, if you lodge a time for both the 5km and 10km distance, you automatically will feature in our 15km combined total event.

What do I get for my entry?

Entry includes our free Gates Classic T-shirt as an option. In addition, there will be random spot prizes for entrants that show that bit extra, in commitment or participation.

How do I get my T-shirt?

As part of your entry process you will be requested to indicate if you want to collect your T-shirt from FSLC Clubhouse or have them delivered to your listed address for free (excluding international) by our sponsor Border Express.

For those collecting T Shirts from the FSLSC Clubhouse there will be several collection dates between the periods 1st January 21 to 10th January 21.

Current collection dates are as follows:

  • Wednesday 30th Dec; 10 am to 12 noon
  • Thursday 31st Dec; 10am to 12 noon
  • Saturday 2nd Jan; 10am to 12 noon
  • Wednesday 6th Jan; 10am to 12 noon
  • Saturday 9th Jan; 10am to 12 noon
  • Sunday 10th Jan; 10am to 12 noon

These will be managed to minimise large gatherings and hence the need to spread the collections over a number of days.

If you are not able to collect your T-shirt from FSLC, they will be mailed out from 11th January 21. Our sponsor Border Express will deliver them but please be patient during these COVID times.

How do I record my race time?

Plan an appropriate course and then complete your run/walk (preferably with a buddy for safety) and either manually record your competitive time or if you have a GPS enabled device, record your “competitive” distance/time and then enter/upload.

When you enter you will be emailed a personal link to a race web site where you can record your race time either manually, via a GPX file, or connect with your Strava account. Remember your single entry allows you to record multiple race times for either or both the 5km and 10km. In addition, if you lodge a time for both the 5km and 10km distance, you automatically will feature in our 15km combined total event.

How do I officially lodge my race time?

All times must be entered prior to 9am on 11th January, 2021.

Can I look up my or my friends entered time?

Yes, results that have been uploaded will be live on our results page.

When can I complete the virtual event?

Your race time must be undertaken between 1st January to 10th January, 2021.
Times must be lodged prior to 9am on 11th January, 2021.

Can I update my time with a faster time?

Yes, if you complete a faster time, you can upload your faster time via the prior used link – up until 9am on 11th January, 2021. Max. two updates per day.

How do I upload a photo/video of my great course, myself or other relevant aspects?

Share your training or event experience at our event Facebook page.

Will there be Event Placegetters?

There will be no official placegetters for this year’s Gates Classic 2021.
Just bragging rights with your fellow competitors.
This is due to the inability of competitors to fairly replicate each course and race times. Compete to stay fit, have fun, and support our volunteer lifesavers.

Can I do my run at Fairhaven Beach?

While we all love our beach course, this year the access and associated movement restrictions will be determined by the State Government later in 2020/2021. Due to Covid-19 health restrictions it is unlikely that people will be encouraged to travel to Fairhaven specifically to train or complete this event, individually or in groups.

All competitors are encouraged to undertake their training and event run safely at a location of their choice, subject to the State Government restrictions that apply at the time.

How is the Race Category Age calculated?

Categories are based on the ages as of our last event date, Sunday 10th January 2021.
